Pointer-outters, bye! To understand... read on... |
Well, radical for me...
I was 12 years-old going on to 13 years-old when an adult decided to point out my cellulite and the bulgy parts above my knees.
I was beginning to enter the stages of pre-puberty hormones and changes, my hips got a bit wider, my thighs a bit thicker and hair began to grow in strange places!
I remember being excited to wear shorts that summer because my mom finally allowed me to start shaving my legs. Yes, I had to ask for permission to shave my legs.
But the thrill of finally getting to flaunt my hairless legs dissipated the minute someone pointed out my bulgyness and dimpled flesh.
This moment wasn't necessarily the end to my shorts-wearing days but it was the beginning of the end. I started to desperately look for special creams, I would do squats every morning but the cellulite would not disappear.
The shorts only got longer and then just no-shorts at all... until...
UNTIL... This summer!
Y'all may not understand, I went through summers in 100+° weather in leggings just so I wouldn't have to show my legs but this summer, I said, "Not this summer satan, NOT THIS SUMMER!"
My body positive journey has been arduous but fun! Fun.. until summer time because I "couldn't" wear shorts. I am in the process of reading "Things no one will tell fat girls" by Jes Baker and with every chapter I read the more I want to say fuck it all!
So, for the first time in over 10 years I wore shorts above the knee to EDC and then again for Fourth of July.
And most recently for my momma's birthday cheers in Napa.
So without further ado here is my casual wear for a Sunday Fun day in Napa in SHORTS!

For a lovely Sunday Funday brunch in Downtown Napa at Angèle I wore shorts because it was HOT
I paired these oh-so comfortable chambray shorts (size 16) from Target with one of my favorite purchases from ASOS, this most comfortable casual striped shirt (size 14).
The final touch was my adorable pair of floral Keds by Kate Spade kicks and as always my handy bag-pack from Topshop - similar one here.
When you catch your hubby taking pictures of your buttocks...
And he says "It's my artistic expression and freedom..."
After brunch we strolled along Downtown Napa, and we got to see the Napa train, folks kayaking and then headed to Porchfest 2016. Porchfest is basically like a block party but in this instance different neighbors host concerts from their porches.
As photographed above - I had decided to wear my hair down for the day but gosh-darn it - it got warmer and warmer but I didn't want to just put my hair up.
As I was about to braid a simple braid (the only braid I know how to braid)- I found a stand from their local blow dry lounge - and got my hair braided ;-)
How cute is this braid? I have cousins who can braid their own hair like no one's business but I wasn't blessed with that type of talent - so paying $10 didn't seem too bad of a deal.
The statement earrings are my favorite to wear at the office or on a casual Sunday; they combine two of my favorites because they're reversible earrings - I get to wear both bows and pearls! Kate Spade: bows and pearls.
I love these shorts and I especially love this top! First of all, it can go from casual to date night with a change in shoes or bottoms - so I love its versatility. I love stripes and this shirt gives me stripes with a twist in detail - and the added detail is lace! I mean! L.O.V.E
And to you pointer-outters (you know those folks that love to point out your "flaws" - love to point out the obvious) if you don't like it, don't look at it- you uncivilized and boorish minded folks.
If you have nothing nice to say, you say nothing at all. Think of the damage you're creating in someone's psyche - and choose to be kind - it costs nothing! Durh!
So here's a toast too many, many, many, many, many, more summers and shorts!
Because I strive to live in a world of self-confidence and self-love without having to pay for it with my heart, my mind and soul.
That is all,
'Til next time.
Toodles,
Lilly Perez-Ngo
PS. Can anyone spot the hidden mickey?
